Amazing People and Food for Thought

Published by under Entertainment,Movies

Jon and I went to the Lyric last night to watch Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage. Info on the back story this movie is based on: White Rose. As with La Vita è bella, I highly recommend the movie for anyone interested in the depth of humanity. I don’t recommend it to those with little or no tolerance for all things considered “deep” or “heavy”. Although the latter film isn’t based on the lives of actual people, the story is certainly real enough.

God breathes life into some amazing people.

Last Day of May

Published by under Personal

Happy New Year!! Yay! I’m now the proud owner of a fancy-schmancy wide screen monitor with all the bells and whistles, and I have a fancy new pair of earrings to boot! I hope everyone else is having a nice holiday, too. :)

Jon tells me the giraffe is held up in customs.

ADDENDUM 06/05/06: As my lovely sister points out, I am remiss yet again. Happy birthday to my newest lil’ niece, Aurora Lee. May the Gemini moon always greet the Gemini sun in your life with a warm, delighted smile (and do torment your mom as much as possible for me.) :)

Mom Update

Published by under Personal

Well, Dad says she’s not completely out of the woods yet, but she gets better by the day. He calls periodically and rambles … doesn’t much let me say anything. I wonder if he needs some place to vent, to be able to tell someone how he’s doing, even if he’s doing it through the telling of how Barbie’s doing. I just listen to him and say a quick “yeh” or “mmm hmm” so he knows I’m still on the phone with him. He’s faced with her mortality, too and I’m sure he’s every bit as terrified of her dying as he claims. It’s not just about love … she’s his sole purpose in life.

He also said nice things about my sister. That hasn’t happened in a long time.

For those of you who’ve sent prayers and hugs via email, thanks. Thanks for knowing I needed them, even if I couldn’t say help directly. :)

It’s a good life.

At Last, It’s Friday

Published by under Mind,Personal,Spirit

It’s a good day and a needed one after this week. On Monday I got a full dose of Myer’s Cocktail and it floored me. Or, perhaps the fun and sun at Colonial Williamsburg, the stress of almost losing my step-mother, and the cocktail made for a bomb of a week. Phew!

It’s a little warm and wet here today, but beautiful just the same. I’ve found a peace within myself over my family situation. I finally realized, if there’s no will I’m not the Executor of the Estate, thus I won’t have to clean up any messes. Granted, the limited memories of my “childhood” home could vanish and a small fortune might be squandered, but I realize that whatever happens and how it unfolds belongs to a system I can’t control.

It’s one of those “Let go, Let God” type of situations and slowly I learn to trust that however life unfolds, it’s as it should be. That doesn’t soften the sorrow of loss, but at least I feel I’ll have time to mourn without having to be the strength the rest of my family will tap into and (ultimately) drain. If, on the other hand, I am the executor of her estate, then I can honor her final wishes down to the last detail.

Two brushes with death in six months … I can’t imagine her fear, but I also know she won’t open up and talk about it. Facing our mortality is the ultimate in fear of the unknown. I wish I could help Barbie trust in whatever grand design there might be, but, you know, I’m also one for going against the grain or struggling against the current.

Still, I can’t help believing that if she’d learn to focus in the now (and start taking better care of herself), she would live a better life. Who knows for how long, but that’s a question none of us can answer.

say your prayers …

Published by under Mind,Personal,Spirit

Even my dreams last night were prayers. We lost Kathy, Laurel’s mom, on my birthday. I’ll be damned if I’m going to lose my step-mother on my birthday, too.

Even so, I am torn. So, I pray for the best outcome … an outcome I can trust will be the right path for all of us, not just what I want. Barbie doesn’t want to die. On the contrary, she very much wants to live. Who am I to decide for her how much she can or cannot suffer to fulfill that destiny? I worry about all things: the financial, emotional, and the spiritual. Will my father and my cousin Alex be out of a home? What will happen to the horses, the dogs, the cats? Who will see to it that my baby nieces have some small legacy to build their lives upon? Certainly not my sister. For as much as she has grown over the last year, given her penchant for spending money unchecked and without thought to the consequences …

I’ve not been able to convince Barbie that having a clearly defined will is not an admission of desire, as if by signing on the dotted line one accepts this is one’s fate. Death is everyone’s fate. I’m constantly at a loss as to how to convey this to my family and to others.

If you say a thing to a family member, for example, perhaps you wish to be cremated, unless it’s in writing, signed and dated, and witnessed, it may not happen. Any close relative, a brother or a sister (provided you don’t have a spouse to make the decisions), can undermine your verbal direction. So, in the event of your death, if you want something specific to happen, write it, don’t say it.

I know pretty much from top to bottom what Barbie wants done and how. She’s told me many times over the last ten years. But, without a proper will, if she dies, the most I can do is stand back and watch while the vultures swarm in. And, they will. When her mother died, I watched her family turn into scavengers and thieves. I can’t imagine they’ll have changed much since that time.

The difference now is that it’s my heritage … my history I’ll have to watch them liquidate and devour.
